Happy Weekend!

bond

I’m digging Mr. Connery’s swim trunks and according to Esquire, this is one of the two looks we women like to see our on our men- the other being Daniel Craig’s swimsuit from Casino Royale. But let’s be honest, we’re talking about the two greatest Bonds ever- what don’t they look good in. Still, they are some cute swim trunks.

I hope you all have fun weekend plans. I’m off to pick up one of my best friends who is in the States from Hong Kong. You all know her here as Amy Abroad. Can’t wait to see her and her little ones.

A little link love:

1. I can’t wait to read this book. Tales from the theater including verbatim notes from the rehearsal process of 1963′s The Cherry Orchard with Uta Hagen… this is bound to be fascinating.

2. And speaking of legends- I’m downloading this one too- My Lunches with Orson, can you even image the stories that are in this book.

3. There’s a new green Coke- green label, that is. But you can only get it in Argentina where Coke is doing a massive marketing blitz to test their new Stevia-based product.

4. I’m digging this video. It’s a graphic design wonderland. Watch it, your eyes will thank you if they’re not too tired.

5. These instagram and twitter highlights from journalist Miriam Elder who spent the past few years in Russia are eye-opening.

P.S.: For anyone with littles, this sanity saving list is pretty great. Thanks Natalia!

Happy Weekend!

just jack

Oh Jack, you are so cool. This Vanity Fair photo is kind of the perfect way to kick off the weekend, with a wink and a smile. Thanks Jack.

I hope you’re all off to a fabulous weekend. This link love roundup is a wee tad smaller than usual as I am busy prepping for a shoot this Monday with Anthology Magazine. I will be hosting a Virginia wine pairing dinner party for my family at a local Virginia vineyard for the story, so I’m busy planning menus and tasting through lots of VA. wine. So fun. If you all have any suggestions for me, please send them along. We are doing sort of a picnic chic theme. Lots of yummy French inspired food centered around what’s in season, so lots of ripe fruit and produce. Fun. I hope you all have a great weekend.

Just a little link love:

Saving Mr. Banks

Hanks takes on Disney

Hanks takes on Disney in the untold tale of the story behind Mary Poppins. It seems that Ms. Mary came to the Banks household not for the children but for Mr. Banks. Now it gets interesting. This is the story of the story behind Mary Poppins as well as the story behind Walt Disney convincing P.L. Travers to sell him the rights to her beloved tale.

I know the Disney blogosphere is blowing up right now over this- everyone’s got a point of view about what really happened. Who knows if this is really the accurate story, but it sure looks interesting and the cast is great- anytime Paul Giamatti shows up, I’m in. We’ll have to wait for Christmas to see it but you can watch the trailer here:

THINK PINK

drunk tank pink

Did you know that a study from the 80s revealed that this particular shade of pink was found to have a calming effect on people with violent and aggressive behavior? Thousands of prison cell walls were immediately coated with this bubblegum hue as well as a few visiting football team locker rooms, hoping to tame the testosterone-fueled linebackers into calm and less effective players. Apparently within 15 minutes of being surrounded by this particular pink, aggressive tendencies are in fact calmed. Hmmm. I don’t know, I like pink an awful lot and though I’m not surrounded by it, I do have a generous amount of it in my closet, expose myself to it daily and I don’t think it’s made me any tamer.

That aside, I do believe that we are subject to our surroundings. How could we not be? Our environment has to have an enormous effect on us. Adam Alter attempts to unveil just how much of an effect our environment has on us in his new book- you got it, Drunk Tank Pink. For a good listen, here’s a great piece with the author via NPR. I’m fascinated.

Happy Weekend!

happy weekend

Happy Weekend all! I have been a trifle bit absent this week as it is a wee bit crazy over here. It’s spring concert time for the dance program that I direct, so there is lots of drama swirling in the air. I may be a little spotty with my presence here until the end of the month, but I will try my best. We are house hunting (yay- a backyard may be in our near future) and I just have to say that we saw the craziest, scariest trinket-filled house yesterday. I kind of loved it but know in my heart that it’s bound to be a money pit. I had visions of Shelley Long and Tom Hanks dancing in my head as we walked through the house. Not the one for us. I love a project but this one would be a life’s work, not sure I’m up to that challenge with 1 year old twins. Oh well, the search continues.

What are you all up to this weekend? We’ll be watching the Tonys and rooting for my brother in law, Terrence Mann to bring home the prize for his amazing portrayal of Charlemagne in Pippin. Woot woot- go Terry. I can’t wait to see what Charlotte wears! We have a fun little dinner planned in Virginia wine country, so hopefully I’ll capture some nice moments to share. Have a beautiful summer weekend!

2. This essay by David Sedaris killed me!

3. I’m obsessed with this farmhouse renovation. Clean, simple and classic. I might add a dash more modern but I love it.

4. How to make your living room look larger (provided you have adjacent outdoor space)- a good tip.

6. And I’m totally making these. Chocolate Chunk Blondies c/o the Barefoot Contessa. Come on!

Happy Weekend and Welcome June!

summer

I just love this. Not sure why- maybe it’s the whole idea of having limits in such vastness or maybe it’s just cool. In any case, happy weekend to you all! I hope you enjoy the first days of June. We’re throwing a tiny birthday party for the tiny bebes. They turned one this week so they’ll be smashing some cakes and opening some presents- yippee.

I’m making this Banana & Blueberry Cake and this Carrot Cake- I just can’t go the full monty yet with the sugar and the ice cream. If you’re rolling your eyes at me as you read this, I don’t blame you. But they’ll be on to sugar soon enough and besides I’m in full on preservation mode. I absolutely love watching them grow but will so miss the tiny babe stage.

I hope you all have a most excellent weekend.

A winemaker’s favorite places around the world.

Next time I’m in Paris (please let it be soon), I’m hitting this place up for the cutest kids’ clothes ever.

The best wedding party photo of all time?

Ikea makes a really cool pharmacy cabinet. I would love this for my bathroom.

For anyone that has the time, here are some super cute DIY cocktail sticks to make your party pinterest perfect. My parties these days are definitely not darlingly designed, it’s more of the throw it all together at the last minute or let’s just have an impromptu picnic but hey- whatever works.

And next time I’m in San Fran (please let it be soon), I’m hitting this place up for fantastic curios and oddities.

Haven’t we all danced around our bedroom in our underwear to the Dixie Chicks, “Landslide”? I know I have. Check out Tyler Marcum dancing alongside his 20 year-old self. This is awesome, he was pretty inspired in that dorm room.

My new favorite wine label.

Animals that you didn’t know existed- love that Irawaddy Dolphin!

Wow. There are so many things to say about this and I really can’t tell whether it’s for real or a spoof but after it’s all said and done, it’s really all about that camel toe and that gallup. Wow.

Mario Batali’s way of welcoming the weekend- Wheeeeeeeeeeeee!

A life sized prairie dollhouse gone- so sad.

This is absolutely hilarious- a conversation between a dad and his 2 year old daughter reenacted by adults.

Our Abandoned America

I recently came across Matthew Christopher’s website and project, AbandonedAmerica. Some call it “Ruin Porn” but Christopher and his cohorts despise the term. They prefer Urban Exploration, aka #urbanex. He photographs abandoned American spaces and is currently holding photography workshops aboard the SS United States to raise money and help save it from demolition. His work is thought provoking and really gets one thinking about the state of our past, present and future. It’s kind of unbelievable to think that these ruins are just siting there, all over the country. Some may not be worth saving but they are most interesting to look at, if not a bit upsetting. Take a look and tell me what you think. If you like his work, like his project on Facebook here and stay in the loop on our abandoned America and how you can play a part in conservation efforts.

He recently held one of his photography workshops onboard the SS United States. Laura Kicey’s photos below:

If you’re thinking about a kitchen reno, here is a step by step process with a budget breakdown. This homeowner lives in San Francisco, so her labor is on the high end but it lays it all. I love the finished product, especially that zinc countertop with those barstools and that vintage hutch- clean and modern with a vintage bent. Love it.

And while we’re talking reno (can you tell what’s on my mind- if only I had something to renovate- ha) Holy Smokes- this renovated convent is rocking my world. I love it! The cement floors might be a wee bit hard for the bebes but it’s stunning.
